I highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys bluesy - gospel music at it's best. Phenomenal. This band's version of "Amazing Grace", sung to the music from "House of the Rising Sun" makes for a listening experience like no other.
It transcends gospel. The inclusion of the legendary back-up artists, musicians is a testament to the respect and admiration the Blind Boys of Alabama enjoys in the real world of music. You do NOT have to be a bible thumping Christian to "get" the music.
I am shocked tht it is not available for purchase on Amazon right now. It digs into your soul, it makes your whole body move, it transforms you. This is my prize CD.
Those gravelly harmonies, the amazing range, the entire CD is full of memorable unforgettable songs. It is Gospel that that gets into your heart and mind and makes you glad you have ears to hear such joy, such rhythm, such music that makes you glad to be alive. It is an essential album. It is an essential in any music lover's collection.
This is AMERICAN MUSIC.
Their cover of Tom Waits' "Way Down in the Hole" is one of my favorite tracks of all-time in any genre (if you watched season one of "The Wire" you'll recognize it as the theme song). And this is some rockin' sockin' gospel music, given a real nitty-gritty bluesy edge by the backup musicians. No need to believe in supernatural deities, folks - just believe in the power of the music to move a funky carbon-based life form. Yeah, that's right, I'm an atheist and a secular humanist. But I dig great music, period.
With the addition of some splendid steel guitar finger picking here, and some funky double bass there, it was a Grammy winner in 2001. They might have started singing over 60 years ago, and be older'n dirt but these boys can rock the house down.
He loves it and listens to it to lift his spirits. This was bought as a gift for a friend of mine who plays guitar and sings spirituals.
